Biological invasions are a major threat to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Forest invasion by alien woody species can have cross-ecosystem effects. This is especially relevant in the case of stream-riparian forest meta-ecosystems as forest streams depend strongly on riparian vegetation for carbon, nutrients and energy. Forest invasion by woody species with dissimilar characteristics from native species may be particularly troublesome. The invasion of temperate deciduous broadleaf forests with low representation of nitrogen (N)-fixing species by N-fixers has the potential to induce ecosystem changes at the stream level. Although effects of tree invasion on stream ecosystems have been under assessed, knowledge of native and invasive tree characteristics allows prediction of invasion effects on streams. Here we present a conceptual model to predict the review of the literature addressing effects of increasing cover of N-fixing species on streams suggests a wide application of the model, while it highlights the need to consider differences in the type of system and species when making generalizations. Changes induced by N-fixing species invasion on streams can jeopardize multiple ecosystem services (e.g. good quality water, hydroelectricity, leisure activities), with relevant social and economic consequences.

Mapping invasive alien Acacia dealbata Link using ASTER multispectral imagery: a case study in central-eastern of Portugal

Aim of the study: Acacia dealbata is an alien invasive species that is widely spread in Portugal. The main goal of this study was to produce an accurate and detailed map for this invasive species using ASTER multispectral imagery.Area of study: The central-eastern zone of Portugal was used as study area. This whole area is represented in an ASTER scene covering about 321.1 x 10 3 ha. Material and methods: ASTER imagery of two dates (flowering season and dry season) were classified by applying three supervised classifiers (Maximum Likelihood, Support Vector Machine and Artificial Neural Networks) to five different land cover classifications (from most generic to most detailed land cover categories). The spectral separability of the land cover categories was analyzed and the accuracy of the 30 produced maps compared.Main results: The highest classification accuracy for acacia mapping was obtained using the flowering season imagery, the Maximum Likelihood classifier and the most detailed land cover classification (overall accuracy of 86%; Kappa statistics of 85%; acacia class Kappa statistics of 100%). As a result, the area occupied by acacia was estimated to be approximated 24,770 ha (i.e. 8% of the study area).Research highlights: The methodology explored proved to be a cost-effective solution for acacia mapping in central-eastern of Portugal. The obtained map enables a more accurate and detailed identification of this species' invaded areas due to its spatial resolution (minimum mapping unit of 0.02 ha) providing a substantial improvement comparably to the existent national land cover maps to support monitoring and control activities.

“…As três etapas das invasões (introduzindo-se, estabelecendo-se, tornando-se uma peste) estão relacionadas ao tempo para colonização das EEI e determinam seus graus de risco. Na etapa (1) os padrões de concentração dos recursos e os efeitos topográficos serão determinantes na expansão das espécies, onde a estrutura da paisagem poderá facilitar a dispersão linear via corredores ripários do habitat ou vias de acesso (Oliveira-Costa, 2014) na etapa (2) os padrões de distribuição geográfica (alto, médio, baixo curso) serão determinantes para sobrevivência dos propágulos das EEI (Pereira & Figueiredo, 2015;Oliveira-Costa & Souza, 2015), podendo surgir uma segunda ordem de estabelecimento de populações, distante do local original da colonização e facilitada dado o grau de fragmentação dos ecossistemas; na etapa (3) a configuração do habitat (altitude, declive, exposição) poderá facilitar a reprodução sustentável das EEI (Oliveira-Costa & Souza, 2015), onde a combinação entre a estrutura da paisagem e a taxa de crescimento das populações poderão favorecer a propagação, alcançando um grau transformador, com impactos potencialmente irreversíveis. O foco deste trabalho é uma análise espacio-temporal das mudanças no uso do solo, no geral, e uma avaliação da contribuição destas alterações para a ocorrência de invasões biológicas.…”
