The adoption of Industry 4.0's digital technologies can enable the implementation of circular economy practices. Nonetheless, current indications for industrial practitioners on how to exploit the broad set of technologies for circular transition appear unclear. This issue is even more challenging for small and medium enterprises, which are typically endowed with more limited resources than larger firms and are characterised by both a digital and circular divide. This present study contributes to the academic debate by offering an exploratory empirical analysis—based on semi‐structured interviews—that involved 10 Italian industrial small and medium enterprises to deepen the knowledge of the supporting role played by digital technologies in implementing circular economy practices by small and medium enterprises, also considering the potential synergies among such technologies. Results are of interest also to industrial decision‐makers, allowing them to exploit their firms' resources towards the adoption of those digital technologies that could be more effective to foster the circular transition.

The issue of sustainability has escalated over the years as the growing concern of world resources that have begun to deplete. Hence, the United Nations (UN) adopted the sustainability 2030 agenda with 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to pursue economic, environmental, and social objectives. One of the most prominent concepts to achieve sustainability is circular economy supply chain (CESC). The basic idea of CESC is a system that aims to eliminate waste and preserves natural resources by keeping materials in use and a regenerative natural system. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the connection between CESC and SDGs as well as the opportunities for research in the future. A systematic literature review on the CESC for SDGs is carried out. There is a significant increase in studies associated with the implementation of CESC to achieve SDGs. The results show that CESC contributes significantly to SDG 2, SDG 8, and SDG 12. Another finding is that technologies could assist CESC practices. CESC implementation for achieving SDGs is not only for big enterprises but also for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Discussions related to social aspects are less often carried out than from economic and environmental aspects. Future opportunities have been identified for four industrial sectors: manufacturing, agriculture, waste management, and natural resources.

Currently, researchers have been particularly interested in Industry 4.0 (I4.0) as a combination of novel revolutionary digital technologies. This evolution is transforming how organizations operate to promote sustainable and circular practices. Consequently, this research empirically investigates the capabilities of I4.0 adoption to establish a sustainable and circular supply chain. The study investigates the impact of organizational factors on the deployment of I4.0 technologies to achieve sustainability objectives. Furthermore, this approach combines empirical and qualitative analyses within a methodological framework to investigate the relationship between organizational factors, I4.0 adoption, sustainable, and circular practices. In this context, survey responses have been collected from 323 supply chain professionals in the textile sector in Morocco. Consequently, employing structural equation modeling, our results reveal a strong link between I4.0 adoption and the promotion of circular and sustainable approaches. The study finds a positive association between I4.0 adoption, technological readiness, and environmental responsiveness while highlighting the challenges posed by organizational practices on I4.0 implementation in developing countries. This research contributes to the theoretical foundations of the potential influence of I4.0 technologies, and it provides practical contributions for stakeholders to effectively embrace I4.0 technologies and thereby drive more sustainable and efficient practices.
