Assessing resources and stress in parents of severely dysfunctional children through the Clarke modification of Holroyd's questionnaire on resources and stress

Abstract: The Holroyd (1974) Questionnaire on Resources and Stress (QRS) although clinically useful may be too inclusive and not exclusively relevant to severely dysfunctional individuals. Hitherto, efforts at shortening and psychometrically validating the QRS have met with some success: the shorter forms however still target both mentally and physically handicapped children and are clinically not as useful as the original instrument. The 78-item Clarke modification of the QRS, mainly a subset of the original, was an at… Show more

“…When compared to parents of typically developing children and children with other disabilities, parents of children with ASD often report higher levels of stress and poorer family functioning (Dumas et al 1991;Konstantareas et al 1992;Sanders and Morgan 1997). This finding holds true for parents across geographic regions and cultures, with children at varying ages and functioning levels (Koegel et al 1992).…”

“…This study extended Estes et al (2009)'s use of the VABS Daily Living score and ABC, but our study used a different measure of parenting stress (Parenting Stress Index-Short Form). Estes and colleagues measured parenting stress using the Questionnaire on Resources and Stress (QRS: Konstantareas et al 1992), which demonstrates good concurrent validity with the PSI (Sexton et al 1992). Standardized tools for the diagnosis of ASD were used, in contrast to the vast majority of prior research (Estes et al 2009, as a notable exception).…”

“…Much published research to date has focused on mothers and fathers of children with autism, demonstrating that they report significantly more stress than parents of children without disabilities and often more than parents of children with other disabilities and chronic illnesses (e.g., Bouma & Schweitzer, 1990;Dumas, Wolf, Fisman, & Culligan, 1991;Kasari & Sigman, 1997;Koegel et al, 1992;Konstantareas, Homatidis, & Plowright, 1992;Rodrigue, Morgan, & Geffken, 1990Sanders & Morgan, 1997;Wolf, Noh, Fisman, & Speechley, 1989). Other researchers have addressed the outcomes for siblings of children with autism.…”
