Assessing PTSD with the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III

Abstract: We studied the utility of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (MCMI-III) in assessing substance-abusing (n = 228), combat-related PTSD patients (n = 32). The MCMI-III produced a code type (16A) that was quite different from MCMI-I and MCMI-II code types (8A2) among similar populations. The PTSD Scale (R) successfully differentiated between a PTSD and non-PTSD substance-abusing group using mean Base Rate scores, was the best predictor of PTSD in a multiple regression equation, and the scale's sensitivi… Show more

“…Moreover, these difficulties are likely to be due to distrust or peculiarities of ideation, appearance, or behavior and not a lack of desire since these groups differed in paranoid, and schizotypal personality but not schizoid personality. These results are consistent with Craig and Olson (1997) who found that disclosure was among the best predictors of PTSD.…”

“…Several studies have examined the personality profiles of trauma survivors. They have used a variety of measures including the MMPI (Engdahl et al, 1991) various version of the MCMI (Craig & Olson, 1997; Hyer, Davis, Albrecht, Boudewyns, & Woods, 1994; Hyer, Woods, & Boudewyns, 1991; Piekarski, Sherwood, & Funari, 1993), Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) (Cherepon & Prinzhorn, 1994) and the self-report section of the SCID (Richman & Fruech, 1996).…”

“…The W I -2 manual (Butcher, et al, 1987) does not provide data on the effects of race on MMPI-2 scale scores, but black men with emotional problems scored onehalf a standard deviation higher on the Si scale than white men with emo- tional problems on the original MMPI (Dahlstrom, Lachar, & Dahlstrom, 1986). This finding is also consistent with recent evidence that black male drug addicts tended to show elevations on the Schizoid scale of the MCMI-I11 (Craig & Olson, 1997).…”

“…Is this an accurate reflection of these studies? For example, Craig and Olson (1997) utilize nonforensic samples to compare combat-related PTSD to substance abuse. Craig (1997Craig ( , p. 1388) studied what he termed ''primary substance misusers'' in treatment at a VA medical center.…”
