Assessing Nebraska playa wetland inundation status during 1985–2015 using Landsat data and Google Earth Engine

Abstract: Playa wetlands in Nebraska provide globally important habitats for migratory waterfowl. Inundation condition is an important indicator of playa wetland functionality. However, there is a lack of long-term continuous monitoring records for playa wetlands. The objective of this study was to determine a suitable index for Landsat images to map the playa inundation status in March and April during 1985-2015. Four types of spectral indices-negative normalized vegetation index, Normalized Difference Water Index (NDW… Show more

“…The NDWI was selected as a complementary model input to the NDVI. Because of its sensitivity to open water [49], the NDWI has been included numerous times in wetland characterization as a means of detecting inundation or separating land from water (e.g., [52][53][54]). …”

“…The Rainwater Basin region in south-central Nebraska has experienced some of the largest losses of wetlands in the Great Plains (Schildman and Hurt 1984;Bishop and Vrtiska 2008;Nugent et al 2015;Tang et al 2016). Spanning * 15,800 km 2 , the Rainwater Basin region once harbored * 12,000 shallow predominantly wind-formed playa wetlands, ranging from \ 1 to 400 ha, that together formed a complex network of high-density, but spatially-isolated wetlands ( Fig.…”

“…1; Frye 1950;Kuzila and Lewis 1993;LaGrange 2005;LaGrange et al 2011). Due to anthropogenic activities, about 80-90% of the historical wetlands in the Rainwater Basin region have been lost or highly altered since European settlement (Schildman and Hurt 1984;Nugent et al 2015;Tang et al 2016). As a result of these wetland losses, wildlife populations in the Rainwater Basin might have become more isolated and could face increased local extinction rates.…”

“…The LWC was retrieved from the normalized difference spectral indices (NDSI 1370 ), 54 difference spectral indices (DSI 1100 and DSI 1940 ), 54 and modified normalized difference water index (NDWI * ), which is obtained by multiplying the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI 2500 ). [55][56][57] Specific definitions of the vegetation indices and evaluation indices used are as follows:…”
