Background: The Chenab River, a major waterway in the Punjab region, is subject to various anthropogenic activities that threaten its ecological integrity. Industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, and urbanization have altered the water quality and affected the river's fish diversity, raising concerns about the long-term health of the river's ecosystem and its implications for human health. Objective: This study aimed to quantify the impact of human activities and water pollution on fish diversity and ecosystem health in the Chenab River. It sought to identify significant pollutants and assess their correlations with ecological indicators. Methods: A comprehensive quantitative analysis was conducted using secondary data spanning ten years. Descriptive statistics were calculated for various environmental parameters, including industrial discharge, agricultural runoff, urbanization rate, water pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and concentrations of heavy metals, nitrates, and phosphates. Correlation and regression analyses were employed to explore the relationships between these parameters and fish species richness and abundance. Results: The study revealed a mean industrial discharge of 584.43 tonnes and agricultural runoff of 290.82 tonnes. Water quality parameters fluctuated with a mean pH of 7.65 and dissolved oxygen levels averaging 8.38 mg/L. Fish species richness exhibited a mean of 49.30 with a standard deviation of 20.842, while fish abundance had a mean of 3089.16 with a standard deviation of 1256.84. Regression analysis showed dissolved oxygen as a significant predictor of fish abundance (p = .051), whereas turbidity and heavy metals had a negative impact, though not statistically significant (p = .100 and p = .092, respectively). Conclusion: The Chenab River's fish diversity and ecosystem health are influenced by anthropogenic pollution, with dissolved oxygen emerging as a critical factor for maintaining fish populations. The findings suggest a need for targeted environmental regulations to improve water quality and protect aquatic life, which is inextricably linked to human health and livelihoods.

This study aimed to assess the physicochemical and biological attributes of water in the Hindon River, located in Northern India and traversing through the districts of Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar. The study specifically examined crucial parameters, including Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Alkalinity (TA), Sulphate (SO42−), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and the biological parameter, that is, Total Coliform. Data for these characteristics of the Hindon River were collected and analyzed based on measurements obtained at the Galheta station in District Baghpat, from 2009 to 2020. The study revealed significant yearly fluctuations in water quality parameters. DO (0.15–9 mg/L) and Total Coliform (319.09 MPN/100 mL to 23 × 106 MPN/100 mL) levels represented the most significant variations, while BOD (30.65–81.54 mg/L) and COD (80.08–170 mg/L) values consistently exceeded acceptable thresholds. TA (151.883–444.86 mg/L) had persistently fallen short of minimum standards, whereas SO42− (24.756–77.441 mg/L) remained within permissible limits. TDS (619–924.16 mg/L) consistently adhered to water quality standards. The findings indicated that the Hindon River's water quality consistently fell into the categories D or E as per Bureau of Indian Standards (IS: 2296) and Class III or IV according to the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) standards and failed to meet the stipulated criteria outlined in BIS (IS: 2490) and had fallen short of the water quality standards established by the World Health Organization (WHO). A correlation coefficient matrix was generated to assess the relationships among the mentioned parameters. The research findings emphasize the need for continuous monitoring of Hindon River water to protect the health of aquatic ecosystems and human well‐being.

Groundwater pollution of the watershed is mainly influenced by the multifaceted interactions of natural and anthropogenic process. To analyse the spatial–temporal variation and pollution source identification and apportionment, the dataset was subjected to a globally acknowledged coherent technique using water quality indices and chemometric techniques (principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis. The bulk of the samples tested were below the BIS’s permissible levels. Groundwater samples from the pre- and post-monsoon seasons mostly contained the anions HCO − 3 > Cl − > SO 2− 4 > NO − 3 , while the primary cations were Ca 2+ > Mg 2+ > Na + > K + . Groundwater was alkaline and hard at most of the sites. According to hydro-geochemical facies and relationships, Piper diagrams, and principal component analysis, weathering, dissolution, leaching, ion exchange, and evaporation were the key mechanisms influencing groundwater quality. The hydrochemical facies classified the groundwater samples into the Ca-Mg-HCO 3 type. For all the sampling locations, PIG was determined to be 0.43, 0.52, 0.47, 0.48, 1.00, and 0.70; respectively. The majority of the test locations fell into the low to medium contamination zone, as determined by the groundwater pollution index (PIG) and contamination index. Three principal components, which together account for 93.8% of the total variance, were identified via PCA. The study’s findings confirm the value of these statistical techniques in interpreting and understanding large datasets and offering reliable information to reduce the time and expense of programmes for monitoring and evaluating water quality.
