Assessing Health Utilities in Schizophrenia

Abstract: Clinically stabilised patients with schizophrenia can provide accurate health state descriptions and assign them utilities with a fair degree of reliability and validity. Utility evaluations based on patients' self-appraisals can be seen as potential tools in outcome studies and clinical trials involving patients with schizophrenia, but the methodology requires further refinement to accommodate the limitations imposed by the patients' disturbed mental status.

“…Utility scores can only be derived from SF-36/12 scores when fully disaggregated scores are reported, so five of the nine papers are not useful as only aggregated SF-36/12 scores are provided. Four papers report utility values for patients with schizophrenia 117,[119][120][121] and two of these report values for a treated and untreated state. 120,121 Three of the four papers report patient-rated values whereas the other 117 used psychiatric nurses to rate preferences.…”

Indeed, preferences are regularly used in the development of quality of life measurements: the EuroQol is an example (EuroQol Group, 1990), and a feasibility study of the paradigm of utility revealed by preference has been published in the field of schizophrenia (Voruganti et al, 2000).…”
