Assessing health-related quality of life in hand osteoarthritis: a literature review

Abstract: Overall HRQL is a broad concept involving domains beyond pain, function and stiffness. Few data are presently available on HOA, but it seems to have almost as great an impact as RA on HRQL. Further studies on HRQL in patients with HOA are required. Aesthetic damage should also be assessed with specifically designed tools.

“…HOA has multifaceted negative impact on persons, and this study, like others, shows that patients carry a significant burden in terms of disability, pain and impaired quality of life 1821. Our study suggests that many patients with HOA carry an additional burden related to their disease that is largely ignored by physicians—that of aesthetic discomfort.…”

“…However, in a study comparing the overall impact of the disease in HOA and RA, the HRQL was found to be similar between the two patient groups, and HOA patients reported worse scores in pain measures and fibromyalgia-like symptoms (32). Further, in a recent literature review, the authors conclude that HOA seems to have almost as great an impact as RA on HRQL (33). The results from our study therefore point to the need for early diagnosis in concert with comprehensive disease management strategies, including HOA-specific patient education to support effective self-management.…”

“…Rheumatoid arthritis and hand osteoarthritis cause hand pain, muscle weakness, joint swelling, stiffness and deformity and reduce grip strength, range of motion and hand function. These effects reduce ability to perform daily activities, work and leisure, causing frustration and distress [5][6][7][8][9][10]. Reducing hand symptoms and maintaining hand function are important rehabilitation aims.…”
