Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent of emergent resource-capability, its configurations and its impacts on customer service innovation and cost advantages in the context of the halal dynamic environment. Design/methodology/approach The study performed a cluster analysis on a sample of 123 Malaysian halal-based third-party logistics (3PL) providers. Findings The findings reveal that the emergent resource-capability comprising physical, technology, knowledge, relational and organizational is advanced uniformly into low, medium and high level. The high resource-capability is significantly different with the medium and low resource-capability, while the medium resource-capability is significantly different with the low resource-capability. The extent of emergent resource-capability has a significantly positive effect on customer service innovation and cost advantage. Especially, high and medium resource-capabilities have enhanced greater customer service innovation and cost advantage significantly, indicating the higher the extent of resource-capability, the greater the enhancement of performance. Practical implications 3PL providers or logistician professionals should understand the extent of emergent resource-capability to empower the competitiveness of service innovation and cost in the dynamic environment. Originality/value The study expands the knowledge with regard to resource-capability complexities which clarify the uniform extent of five emergent resource-capability naturally and provides empirical evidence on the emergent resource-capability of halal logistics services that can empower a successful halal logistics services and competitiveness.

The development of halal principles extends not only to halal products but also to logistics processes. This study applies structural equation modelling (SEM) to analyse the structural relationships among perceived value, perceived usefulness, knowledge, intention, and behaviour toward halal logistics acceptance. Through a questionnaire survey, 779 items of feedback were obtained. This study finds that there is a positive relationship between perceived value and knowledge on halal logistics with perceived usefulness. The findings suggest that in the context of promoting halal logistics, firms producing halal products need to educate consumers to have perceived usefulness of halal logistics.

The Government today, Government Business Entity and mass media in Indonesia are starting to pay attention to halal, since the turnover of halal products of the world has reached nearly 2 trillion dollars while Indonesia is still larger to be a consumer than a manufacturer. Not only foods, consumers in the world today want cosmetics to pharmaceutical products that have been halal certified. In Indonesia, problems with the potential of halal market today are still hit on the discourses. Indonesia still limited awareness not yet dared to action, whereas in non-Muslim countries themselves many have implemented halal supply chain. The establishment of Halal Hub Port in Tanjung Priok as the first Halal Hub Port pilot project in Indonesia is the forerunner to establish Halal Hub Port in other parts of Indonesia. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the needs of Halal Warehouse at Tanjung Perak Port which in fact is also a major port in Indonesia and is a distribution door for the central and eastern part of Indonesia. The study was conducted on 190 respondents who are stakeholders of Tanjung Perak Port. Using the Importance Performance Analysis method, the results of the research produced a quadrant graph where quadrant A is the main priority containing performance of L/U equipment in terminal, performance of L/U workers/operator in terminal, separation of halal and non-halal products in halal warehouse, sorting of halal and non-halal products that have been damaged, cold storage separation between halal and non-halal products, clean and avoid contamination between products, special training for officers in halal warehouse, and hygiene facilities for officers in warehouse/halal warehouse. Quadrant B is to maintain the achievement contains 11 items, Quadrant C is low priority contains 5 items, and Quadrant D is excessive contains 5 items. The existence of 8 items entered in quadrant A, indicating that stakeholders at Tanjung Perak Port are very aware with the potential of Halal Warehouse.
