Assessing flash flood hazard and damages in the southeast United States

Abstract: Flash floods are common natural hazards in the southeast United States (SEUS) as a consequence of frequent torrential rainfall caused by tropical storms, thunderstorms, and hurricanes. Understanding flash flood characteristics is essential for mitigating the associated risks and implementing proactive risk management strategies. In this study, flash flood characteristics including frequency, duration, and intensity are assessed in addition to their associated property damages. The National Oceanic and Atmosphe… Show more

“…The hourly precipitation data from Phase 2 of the North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS‐2) is available at 1/8th‐degree spatial resolution (about 12 km) for the period of January 1979 to the present (Xia et al., 2012). This hourly precipitation data is generated from multiple in situ and remotely sensed data sources (Alipour, Ahmadalipour, & Moradkhani, 2020; Yu et al., 2017). Although the radius to maximum wind speeds is often less than 100 km, the precipitation radius can be much larger.…”

“…16 In the Southeast, climate change has helped boost the number and intensity of flash floods since 1996. 17 Flash floods can damage roads and bridges and sweep vehicles off the road.…”

“…Flooding is one of the world's most pervasive and destructive natural hazards. Few regions are unaffected by flood events, and, on a global scale, incidents of flooding outnumber all other natural hazards and have been increasing over the past three decades (Alipour et al, 2020; Berz et al, 2001). Consequently, the economic costs of flooding, arising from damage to human health, property, and assets and from inhibited travel (Grothmann & Reusswig, 2006; Hallenbeck et al, 2014), are almost unmatched by costs of other hazardous events and have been rising sharply (Ashley & Ashley, 2008; Berz et al, 2001; Grothmann & Reusswig, 2006).…”
