Assessing Emoji Use in Modern Text Processing Tools

Abstract: Emojis have become ubiquitous in digital communication, due to their visual appeal as well as their ability to vividly convey human emotion, among other factors. This also leads to an increased need for systems and tools to operate on text containing emojis. In this study, we assess this support by considering test sets of tweets with emojis, based on which we perform a series of experiments investigating the ability of prominent NLP and text processing tools to adequately process them. In particular, we consi… Show more

“…The pervasive use of emojis in text-based interactions among Nigerian youths introduces a dynamic layer to communication, significantly influencing the way emotions and intentions are conveyed in digital conversations [54]. While emojis serve as expressive tools that can enhance understanding and add nuance to messages [55], their subjective interpretations can also lead to miscommunication [56]. This study sheds light on the intricate interplay between cultural context, individual perceptions, and the evolving language of emojis in the Nigerian youth demographic.…”

“…With a behaviour that could be similar to that of some words, in terms of ngrams, structures of words that appear frequently together, in which "n" marks the number of words in the composition. This is what Shoeb and De Melo (2021) call tokens, using big data terminology: their proposal is to tokenise a text, fragmenting it into different tokens, which can be words, emojis or other characters. However, it is better explained as the representation of gestures, because these repetitions are more characteristic of gestures than of grammar.…”

“…We used 'Natural Language Toolkit' (NLTK) for many of the required tools, including POS tagging, lemmatisation, and 'TweetTokenizer' tool, which has been shown to perform well for this type of corpora [6]. The set of 'stopwords' used was the union of the default nltk.corpus.stopword set and the set of singular punctuation characters, {!, ?, &, • • • }.…”
