Assessing early-onset hallucinations in the touch-screen generation

Abstract: The increasing development of apps for digital devices provides an opportunity for new instruments to assess hallucinations in young individuals. Here we present the Multisensory HAllucinations Scale for Children (MHASC), dedicated to assessing complex early-onset hallucinations. The MHASC will soon be translated into multilanguage versions with the support of the International Consortium of Hallucination Research.

“…This app utilizes common game-based aesthetics and codes to increase engagement and motivation of children and adolescents during the assessment, using a simple, intuitive, and playful interface with developmentally appropriate language. 95 The MHASC app was designed for use in community populations of children and adolescents. Recognizing that potential harm can come from labeling the experienced phenomena as mental illness, the developers emphasize that MHASC is not a diagnostic tool but more a quantitative and phenomenological measure.…”

“…11,30,35 ESM offers a number of advantages over retrospective assessments, including allowing assessment of real-world, real-time experiences (ie, in situ and in vivo) with limited need of episodic memory input and minimal impact of cognitive biases. Technological advances over the past decade have made it feasible to employ ESM using electronic mobile devices, 29,30,[35][36][37][38][39] including among hospitalized individuals. 30,40 Such devices provide precise time-stamps of the participants' responses, allowing for ascertainment of temporal links to concurrent autonomic indicators.…”

“…Although preliminary, our results support initiatives in which a routine exploration of traumatic events in childhood is performed when multimodal hallucinations are present, in complement to other pertinent features such as help-seeking. 10 Because young people rarely volunteer information about these intimate experiences, dedicated tools able to non-intrusively explore the phenomenology of early-onset hallucinations could be particularly helpful 8 and allow clinicians to better define adjusted and personalised healthcare.…”
