Assessing Diatom Community Dynamics in a Recovering Agricultural Stream in Middle Georgia, USA

Abstract: Streams play vital roles in surrounding communities and provide essential ecosystem services. The protection of streams is important, they are legally protected under the Clean Water Act, and they can be monitored through the continuous analyses of biological data, such as algal or other aquatic communities. The goals of this study were to analyze the long-term recovery of Tobler Creek, a recovering agricultural stream on the site of a National Historic Landmark, and yield comparisons to a local low-impact str… Show more

“…Another limitation to currently using genomic information to document freshwater algal diversity is the lack of published freshwater genome sequences compared to the number of algal species [6]. An emerging solution is providing voucher flora or micrographs to standardize species identifications [7][8][9][10][11][12]. These vouchers provide consistency in taxonomic identification for long-term studies and help avoid misrepresentation, which is possible when only lists or tables of species names are provided.…”
