Assessing Cotton Genotypes for Resistance to Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Abstract: Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a polyphagous species frequently associated with the presence of sooty mold and viruses lethal to plants. The purpose of this work was to characterize possible resistance categories of cotton genotypes against A. gossypii. Initially, a preliminary test was carried out with 78 genotypes, 15 of which were selected for infestation ability assays and the determination of the cumulative aphid-day rates. Posteriorly, these genotypes were also evaluated through antixeno… Show more

“…This practice was continued until the experimental adult's death. A total of 6 parameters, including total nymphs produced, nymphs produced per day, total nymph produced by day 10 after the experimental nymph's birth, experimental nymph's developmental time, adult reproductive stage duration, and adult longevity, were estimated from the data gathered (Morando et al 2021).…”

“…Given the importance of aphids as a major cotton pest and the need for developing durable cotton aphid management technology, HPR remains a unique and frontline approach. However, research on screening cotton genotypes for aphid resistance remains sparse (Weathersbee and Hardee 1994, Razmjou et al 2006a, 2006b, Zarpas et al 2006, Furtado et al 2009, Correa et al 2013, Morando et al 2021). Despite all of the breakthroughs made in insect pest management tactics, conventional breeding-based development of insect-resistant crops is still regarded as the most effective way and the foundation for insect pest management programs (Marimuthu and Smith 2012, Smith 2021).…”

“…Several environment‐friendly control tactics have been adopted for management A. gossypii in the last few decades, such as biocontrol (Madadi et al, 2011; Sahayaraj et al, 2020; Zhao et al, 2021), and plant resistance (Boissot et al, 2016; Morando et al, 2021), while spraying synthetic insecticides remains the dominant approach to combat A. gossypii (Ma et al, 2019, 2021; Shi et al, 2022). However, the frequent application and overuse of chemical insecticides resulted in the rapid evolution of resistance of A. gossypii to many types of insecticides, including organophosphorus, pyrethroid, and neonicotinoid insecticides (Gore et al, 2013; Koo et al, 2014).…”

“…This target pest causes a high level of economic and ecological problems associated with the occurrence of sooty mold and lethal virus diseases to plants. It also possesses a rapid reproduction and high insecticide resistance (Quan et al, 2019;Zhao et al, 2021;Morando et al, 2021).…”
