Assessing anxiety and its correlates in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: The state‐trait anxiety inventory

Abstract: Introduction: We evaluated: (1) psychometric properties of State‐Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y (STAI Form Y); (2) clinical correlates of state and trait anxiety; (3) associations of anxiety with quality of life (QoL) dimensions. “…A recent meta-analysis reported that the STAI-T demonstrated high reliability (α = 0.87–0.93) and differentiated between the general population and people with anxiety [ 35 ]. Similarly, recent studies in non-English-speaking countries reported highly satisfactory reliability coefficients for the STAI-T, for example, Iran: α = 0.86 [ 36 ]; Italy: α = 0.92 [ 37 ]. Padmanabhannuni and colleagues [ 38 ] reported very satisfactory estimates of internal consistency for the STAI-T when used with South African respondents (α = 0.91, ω = 0.91).…”

“…23 Antidepressants are also indicated for anxiety disorders 24 including agoraphobia and panic disorder, the two most common anxiety disorders in patients with ALS. 25 Nonetheless, there is a significant positive correlation between the symptoms of depression and the use of antidepressants, 26 and a previous study on 80 patients with ALS showed that a majority of them taking antidepressants receive them for the treatment of depression. 27 The risk of being prescribed antidepressants in our study seems to be closely related to the fact that they are the treatment of choice for depression.…”
