Assessing an academic library collection through capacity and usage indicators: testing a multi‐dimensional model

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to test a multi-dimensional model of indicators for collection evaluation (proposed in a previous paper by the authors) and to illustrate how to apply these indicators in practice. Design/methodology/approach -An analytical study will be used to test the use of the multi-dimensional collection evaluation model to assess an academic library collection. The study will: define the scope of the collection; focus on two of the dimensional categories (capacity and usage) and ide… Show more

“…The usage data could tell us the characteristics of use, including usage frequency, types of materials and what subjects were being used, which would provide us with valuable information for improving library collections and services. As stated in another article by Borin and Yi (2011), usage was reaffirmed as one of the good indicators for assessing academic library collections which showed the users' interest in using the collection. Circulation statistics for physical items, e.g.…”

“…To respond to the diverse and evolving library world today, Borin and Yi created several indicators for collection evaluation. They were collection capacity, subject-specific standards, scholarly publishing, environmental factors, users and usage (Borin and Yi, 2011). In our study, usage-based approach, one of the key indicators, was adopted.…”

“…Traditionally, an effective way to assess a diverse physical library collection was to focus on two indicators, capacity and use (Borin and Yi, 2008, 2011; Henry et al , 2008). The transition period from primarily print formats to primarily digital formats required researchers to take account of this shifting landscape in collection evaluation (Borin and Yi, 2008).…”

“…10 The most recent articles focus on usage statistics as a tool for return on investment analysis (ROI). 11 Our study is the first in the French-speaking scientific literature to analyse the uptake and usage of statistics in academic libraries.…”
