Assessing 30-day quantity-frequency of U.S. adolescent cigarette smoking as a predictor of adult smoking 14 years later

Abstract: Background: To improve measures of monthly tobacco cigarette smoking among non-daily smokers, predictive of future non-daily monthly and daily smoking. Methods: Data from United States National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, tracking adolescents, ages 12–21, over 14 years were analyzed. At baseline, 6501 adolescents were assessed; 5114 individuals provided data at waves 1 and 4. Baseline past 30-day non-daily smokers were classified using quantity-frequency measures: cigarettes smoked/day … Show more

“…It is hardly plausible that a single puff or a few puffs on an e‐cigarette can cause subsequent regular smoking. Past 30‐day use is often used as a measure of current use , but it is not a satisfactory measure because in adolescents past 30‐day use is a heterogeneous category that includes both experimentation (single use), occasional use and regular use . Experimentation with tobacco is certainly not what is meant by the gateway theory.…”

“…According to longitudinal studies, however, smoking as a teenager predicts smoking as an adult. (Saddleson et al, 2016;Sargent, Gabrielli, Budney, Soneji, & Wills, 2017) A responsible smoker In all the group discussions students presented themselves as responsible smokers who actively took nonsmokers and children into consideration. The discussions stated that it is acceptable to smoke, but you must smoke responsibly and take other people into consideration, as they did.…”

“…This framework fits with contemporary use patterns in young adults which range from daily, heavy use to non-daily, light use. It also allows prevescalation efforts to engage a broader range of young users-not just never users or any past 30-day users, or more established most days, every day, or more than daily users-in interventions (Kozlowski and Giovino 2014;Saddleson et al 2016;Villanti et al 2016;Warner 2015). An important assessment challenge is the need to rely on selfreports, given that there are no objective measures that can capture the patterning of use of multiple tobacco-and nicotine-containing products that is often sporadic and highly variable.…”
