Dissolved oxygen (DO) and heat exchanges across the water-sediment interface (WSI) of a shallow lagoon are controlled by processes occurring on both sides of the WSI, particularly volumetric source and sink on the sediment side and turbulent transport on the waterside. This article presents and analyzes measurements of DO (J s ) and heat (H g ) fluxes across the WSI in the extremely shallow lagoon of Salar del Huasco (20.274°S, 68.883°W, 3800 m above sea level), where volumetric source of DO and heat exists in the sediment layer, related to benthic primary production and absorption of solar radiation, respectively. Microprofiles of temperature and DO were measured, and they were used for measuring J s and H g , and volumetric source/sink terms in the sediments. This information was used to propose and validate the simple theoretical framework to predict both the magnitude and direction of J s and H g . On the one hand, J s can be predicted with a simple algebraic expression, where the diffusional mass transfer coefficient defines the magnitude of J s while the direction is controlled by the balance between DO production and consumption in the sediments. On the other hand, solar radiation is absorbed in the upper sediments, and this heat diffuses toward the water column and the sediments. The heat flux toward the water column also induces unstable convection that promotes vertical transport across the WSI. The theoretical framework proposed here will help to understand DO and heat budgets of shallow aquatic systems in which solar radiation reaches the WSI.

La digestión de sedimentos continentales siguió la metodología descrita por Herrera et al (2009): se tamizaron en malla de 63 μm y se usaron procesos digestivos en bombas de teflón a alta presión con la mezcla HCl (sp Merck) y HNO 3 (3:1) en sistema abierto por 16 h a 20 ºC, luego por 5 h a 50 ºC y posteriormente, cerradas herméticamente, por 3 h a 170 ºC. Palabras clave: humedal, biodisponibilidad, extracción secuencial, código de evaluación de riesgo, efectos de rango bajo y medio RESUMEN En el río, laguna y zona de mezcla del río Loa (norte de Chile), así como en las playas aledañas a su desembocadura, se determinó el riesgo ecológico potencial por arsénico en las fracciones disponibles del sedimento, con base en los efectos de rango bajo y medio. Se dedujeron la constante de distribución, el índice de geoacumulación (Igeo) y el factor de enriquecimiento (FE) de As. Para estimar el As reactivo se compararon tres procedimientos de extracción simple, y con el fin de obtener el código de evaluación de riesgo se aplicaron las dos primeras etapas de la extracción secuencial de Tessier y la biodisponibilidad según el esquema BCR modificado. Las aguas continentales saladas y alcalinas presentaron un carácter reductor, bajos contenidos de OD, N/P y Cu, pero As elevado (1.13-1.80 mg/L), diluido en el mar a 0.012 mg/L. Los sedimentos continentales neutros presentaron materia orgánica baja (2-6 %), niveles aceptables de N/P, CaCO3 (5.3-31 %) y Cu, pero As elevado (516-856 mg/kg). En sedimentos marinos alcanzó 20 mg/kg de As. Los valores del Igeo establecen la categoría de contaminación terrestre, pero no marina, aunque los FE confirman la presencia de riesgo potencial elevado en la desembocadura. Las extracciones simples y el código de evaluación de riesgo lo señalan como móvil y biodisponible. El nivel de As en el sedimento fluvial asociado a las fracciones intercambiable, reducible y oxidable, confirman riesgo potencial para el ecosistema en condiciones alcalinas y reductoras. En cambio, en el borde costero, el As se encuentra asociado mayoritariamente a las fracciones residual e intercambiable, lo cual reduce el riesgo potencial.

The concentration levels of As in the Chilean II Region of Antofagasta produces non cancer health outcomes such as cardiovascular diseases and in last term heart attack. On this study, the determination of total As content and main inorganic and organoarsenic species found in three heart tissues (auricle, mammary artery and fat) and the saphene vein of people living in the Chilean II Region, suffering coronary thrombosis has been carried out. Comparison with similar tissues of patients from other non-contaminated areas has been undertaken.The extraction of As species occurred in methanol: water (1:1) and As species determination have been used the tandem HPLC-ICP-MS using the Hamilton PRP X100 anion column. For total As determination has been performed by HG-AAS and ICP-MS.The auricle and in less extend the saphene support the higher As concentration (mean values of 7.7 and 2.5 µg g -1 , respectively), being As(III) the predominant species. Methylarsonate (MA) and dimethylarsinate (DMA) is not a favoured mechanism.The presence of high total As and high As(III) species content in the auricle and saphene of more contaminated people, the damage found in the saphene tissue and the global characteristics of the people under study in which the As stigmas are present in all of them, suggests that As could be involved in the cardiovascular diseases.
