Assembly of Lyotropic Liquid Crystals with Solid Crystal’s Structural Order Translated from the Lipid Rafts in Cell Membranes

Abstract: Self-assembly offers a powerful way to control the complexity and hierarchy of nanoscale materials, and promises to create a diverse range of emergent properties. Successful syntheses that allow a delicate structural design of building units play an important role. However, as can be learned from many cellular processes and functions, coself-assembly using logically chosen additives should be equally effective in designing self-assembly. Herein I show that, translated from the dynamic nanoscale assemblies in c… Show more

“…[4,5] Based on the phase-transition condition, the LCs are classified into two types including thermotropic LCs and lyotropic LCs. [6][7][8] The thermotropic LCs can realize phase transition driven by temperature, widely used in optical devices. [9,10] However, the lyotropic LCs can realize phase transition under various solvent concentrations, usually studied in the field of biology.…”

“…There has been a growing interest in the studies of lyotropic liquid crystals (LLC) due to their essential role in diverse biological systems. The well-known example of an LLC is myelin sheath, which is responsible for the efficient propagation of action potential between neurons. This structure is mainly composed of lipids that form stacked bilayers in an aqueous medium .…”
