Assembly of gelatin biopolymer to fibrous sepiolite clay for efficient dye removal from wastewater

Abstract: This work aimed to fabricate nanocomposites using low‐cost and natural materials for fast and efficient dye adsorption from wastewater. To achieve this, fibrous sepiolite clay was incorporated into the gelatin (GE) biopolymer. The obtained nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope techniques. The effects of sepiolite/GE ratio, adsorbent dosage, solution pH, contact time, and initial dye concentration on the adsorption capacity of nanocomposite… Show more

“…Similar materials have been further improved by forming pores in cellulose/montmorillonite composites [187,188] including aerogels [189]. Gelatin is another biopolymer that forms stable hydrogels with clay minerals and efficiently adsorbs several types of organic dyes [190].…”

“…Temperature is an essential parameter which affect the process of microbial activities in the reactor system (Sabzi et al 2019). In the present investigation, temperature increases with decrease in MC and simultaneously decreases the microbial activity in the reactor.…”

“…In numerous studies, the utilization of clays in their unbound state presents a challenge, thus necessitating their incorporation into a support medium, such as a polymer, to facilitate ease of handling [16,17]. Thus, sepiolite has been widely used to fabricate composites, which inherits the advantages of both sepiolite and matrix.…”
