Abstract-Wireless home networks are increasingly deployed in people's homes worldwide. Unfortunately, home networks have evolved using protocols designed for backbone and enterprise networks, which are quite different in scale and character to home networks. We believe this evolution is at the heart of widely observed problems experienced by users managing and using their home networks. In this paper we investigate redesign of the home router to exploit the distinct social and physical characteristics of the home.We extract two key requirements from a range of ethnographic studies: users desire greater understanding of and control over their networks' behaviour. We present our design for a home router that focuses on monitoring and controlling network traffic flows, and so provides a platform for building user interfaces that satisfy these two user requirements. We describe and evaluate our prototype which uses NOX and OpenFlow to provide per-flow control, and a custom DHCP implementation to enable traffic isolation and accurate measurement from the IP layer. It also provides finer-grained per-flow control through interception of wireless association and DNS resolution. We evaluate the impact of these modifications, and thus the applicability of flow-based network management in the home.

This thesis explored, through an interaction design process, aspects of enabling end user creativity in ubiquitous computing environments and has defined related conceptual and methodological tools to enable a vision of user empowerment and independence within pervasive computing environments.Concepts, models, tools and user interfaces are explored by use of a scenario based design approach.Research presented in this thesis has made some headway in the effort to empower people to actively shape Ambient Computing environments. It has demonstrated the feasibility of letting end-users shape their ubicomp environments. Experience from system implementation case studies, as well as evaluation of expert and end-user trials, all suggest that an architectural model, where users act as composers of predefined components, is a worthwhile approach.Evaluation results show that people understand the split in the dual nature of artifacts: their tangible and sensory characteristics and their connectable software counterparts. This paper describes how home appliances might be enhanced to improve user awareness of energy usage. Households wish to lead comfortable and manageable lives. Balancing this reasonable desire with the environmental and political goal of reducing electricity usage is a challenge that we claim is best met through the design of interfaces that allows users better control of their usage and unobtrusively informs them of the actions of their peers. A set of design principles along these lines is formulated in this paper. We have built a fully functional prototype home appliance with a socially aware interface to signal the aggregate usage of the user's peer group according to these principles, and present the prototype in the paper.
