Assembled Nanocomplex for Improving Photodynamic Therapy through Intraparticle Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer

Abstract: In recent years, one of main obstacles in a photodynamic therapy (PDT) process has been that most photosensitizers for PDT are excited by visible light with limited penetrating ability; thus most applications of PDT are for superficial treatments. One of the methods to increase the treatment depth is to introduce a two-photon-active technique into PDT, known as TP-PDT. The difficulty here is to obtain photosensitizers with a large enough two-photon absorption cross-section. In this work, an organic nanocomplex… Show more

“…Förster RET (FRET) involves energy transfer from an excited molecular chromophore (the donor) to another chromophore (the acceptor). 107,108 The following factors are primarily required to cause FRET: (i) a spectral overlap between the uorescence of the donor chromophore and the absorption of the acceptor chromophore, (ii) small distance between the donor and the acceptor (typically, 10-100Å), and (iii) parallel orientations of the donor and the acceptor transition dipoles. Yamamoto and Kawasaki et al applied FRET for a nanocomposite of BSA-Au NC and methylene blue (MB) (BSA-Au NC-MB) to enhance the 1 O 2 generation.…”
