ABSTRACT. Associations of fishes in the coastal region of Itaipu, Niterói. The coastal region of Itaipu, Rio de Janeiro forms a partially sheltered sound, protected by three islands, but still maintaining full communication with the open sea. The sound also receives fresh water input from the Itaipu-Piratininga lagoon system, constituting an area of intense artisanal fisheries. Using data from monthly monitoring of the artisanal fisheries (beach seining, gill netting and hand lining), experimental surf zone beach seine surveys, underwater visual census (Menina, Mãe, and Pai islands), and a multisampling experiment at Itaipu Lagoon, we elaborated a list of fish species occurring in the region, observing their connectivity with different local habitats, including the sound, rocky reefs, the surf zone and Itaipu Lagoon. We identified 183 species including 26 Elasmobranchii, grouped in 13 families, and 157 Actinopterygii grouped in 63 families. The artisanal beach seining caught the greatest number of species (112), followed by the gill netting (94) and hand lining (35). The surf zone beach seining ("picaré") yielded 49 species (8 exclusive) represented mostly by juvenile fish and species of little economic importance. Visual censuses resulted in 41 species identified, with 21 exclusive and most of them cryptic. Within the Itaipu lagoon, 46 species were recorded, 18 exclusive and of occasional occurrence. Cluster analysis including 106 non exclusive species resulted in the formation of eight different groups. Groups A and B were composed by species captured exclusively by the artisanal fisheries within the sound, and included species of commercial interest. Group C included species occurring in the fisheries whose juveniles are found in the surf zone. Group D classified species of common occurrence in the fisheries and the islands. Group E was represented by species shared by the fisheries and Itaipu lagoon (mullets, mojarras, herrings). Species from group F were absent in the islands, those from group G in the lagoon, and those from group H were common to all areas considered. Compared with other coastal areas in southeastern Brazil, Itaipu represents an important concentration area for fish biological diversity and biomass, yielding species associations and connectivity between the different local habitats. A B S T R A C TLagoons along the western coast of the South Atlantic Ocean shelter high densities of juvenile fish and are key areas for several seabirds that rely on the resources offered by this kind of ecosystem. The objective of this study was to analyze fish composition and abundance in shallow-water areas of the estuarine region of Mar Chiquita Coastal Lagoon (Argentina) and the diet composition of the Black skimmer (Rynchops niger) during its non-breeding season as well as evaluating its inter-annual variations. Fish were sampled with a beach-seine net and the skimmers' diet was analyzed from their pellets. The estuarine-dependent marine fishes were the best represented bio-ecological category followed by freshwater fishes. Significant differences were observed in fish abundance and composition between and within years. Species richness was higher during the summer season and during the first year sampled. The occurrence of freshwater fishes as an important and diverse group of the Mar Chiquita estuarine area contrasted with previous reports. The diet of the Black skimmer included freshwater, estuarine and marine fish species. Skimmers forage in the shallow waters of the estuarine area of the Mar Chiquita Coastal lagoon though little similarity was observed between its diet and local fish abundance. These results emphasize the importance of performing these evaluations in order to improve the quality of studies and the interpretations of top predators foraging ecology. R E S U M OAs lagoas costeiras do Oceano Atlântico Sul abrigam altas densidades de peixes juvenis e são áreas-chave para diversas aves marinhas que dependem dos recursos oferecidos por esses ecossistemas. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi analisar a abundância e a composição de peixes na região estuarina da Lagoa Costeira Mar Chiquita (Argentina), a dieta do talha-mar (Rynchops niger) e as variações interanuais. Os peixes foram coletados com uma rede de praia tipo picaré e a dieta do talha-mar analisada a partir de suas fezes. O peixe-marinhos dependentes do estuário foram a categoria bioecológica melhor representada, seguido por peixes de água doce. Foram observadas diferenças intranuais e interanuais significativas na abundância e composição da ictiofauna. A riqueza de espécies foi maior durante o verão e no primeiro ano da amostragem. A ocorrência de peixes de água doce como um grupo importante e diversificado na área estuarina do Mar Chiquita contrasta com resultados de estudos anteriores realizados na área. A dieta do talha-mar incluiu peixes de água doce, estuarinos e marinhos. Apesar dessa ave se alimentar em águas rasas da área estuarina do Mar Chiquita, uma baixa similaridade entre sua dieta e abundância local de peixes foi observada. Esses resultados reforçam a importância da realização de avaliações a fim de proporcionar avanço nos estudos e melhorar as interpretações sobre a ecologia alimentar de predadores de topo.

ABSTRACT1. Growing concern associated with threats to the marine environment has resulted in an increased demand for marine reserves that conserve representative and adequate examples of biodiversity. Often, the decisions about where to locate reserves must be made in the absence of detailed information on the patterns of distribution of the biota. Alternative approaches are required that include defining habitats using surrogates for biodiversity. Surrogate measures of biodiversity enable decisions about where to locate marine reserves to be made more reliably in the absence of detailed data on the distribution of species.2. Intertidal habitat types derived using physical properties of the shoreline were used as a surrogate for intertidal biodiversity to assist with the identification of sites for inclusion in a candidate system of intertidal marine reserves for 17 463 km of the mainland coast of Queensland, Australia. This represents the first systematic approach, on essentially one-dimensional data, using fine-scale (tens to hundreds of metres) intertidal habitats to identify a system of marine reserves for such a large length of coast. A range of solutions would provide for the protection of a representative example of intertidal habitats in Queensland.3. The design and planning of marine and terrestrial protected areas systems should not be undertaken independently of each other because it is likely to lead to inadequate representation of intertidal habitats in either system. The development of reserve systems specially designed to protect intertidal habitats should be integrated into the design of terrestrial and marine protected area systems.
