“…The magnitude of the Ca decrease in our cases was small when compared with that induced in rats by the electrocauterization of the thyroid (Hirsch et al, 1964). The concentration of thyrocalcitonin was reported much lower in the human than in the rat thyroid, although information is still scanty with the diseased thyroid (Aliapoulios et al, 1966). The metabolic activity of bone appears to determine the sensitivity of the given animals to thyrocalcitonin (Copp, 1967), and this activity is considered less in our patients as compared with the young rats on a low Ca diet.…”

“…A similar substance which induced hypocalcemia in rat was also extracted from the human thyroid (Aliapoulios et al, 1966). Furthermore, the hog thyrocalcitonin was shown to reduce the blood Ca level but not the blood P level in hypercalcemic patients (Milhaud and Job, 1966 Six patients, 1male and 5 females, and aged from 23 to 37years, were the subjects of this study.…”

“…Thyrocalcitonin has been found in high concentration in the thyroid of several subjects with pseudohypoparathyroidism (34)(35)(36), but this finding is a manifestation of hypocalcemia (37,38), not hypersecretion of the hormone. Removal of the thyroid glands from two patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism caused only a transient rise in serum calcium in one patient (36) and no detectable change in the other (39).…”

“…During the second admission, a biopsy of the thyroid gland was performed. Biological assay of the thyrocalcitonin content in the thyroid tissue according to the method of Aliapoulios et al (1966) revealed no significant increase as compared with normal subjects (8 mMRC units/g gland). The thyrocalcitonin content in peripheral venous plasma which was determined according to the method of Kumar et al (1965) also gave normal result (180 mMRC units/L).…”
