Aspirin Is Associated With Reduced Rates of Venous Thromboembolism in Older Patients With Cancer

Abstract: Background: Older patients with cancer are at high risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE) and bleeding. Aspirin may decrease VTE in the general population without significant bleeding. Here, we examined whether aspirin is associated with reduced rates of VTE in older patients with cancer. Methods and Results: Using the National Inpatient Sample 2016, we retrospectively identified a cohort of patients with cancer ≥65 years old who received aspirin and a similar cohort who did not receive aspirin (n = 3… Show more

“…Consistent with our findings, a recent large retrospective analysis of patients 65 or older with cancer reported an association with aspirin use and reduction in VTE. 23 Aspirin may be an attractive alternative option for patients who are not candidates or do not prefer full or prophylactic dose anticoagulation, such as those taking concomitant medications that can lead to significant drug interactions, impaired renal or hepatic function, or with a high bleeding risk. The fact that aspirin is oral and low cost may also be favorable for some patients.…”

“…Given the increasing risks of MACCEs in prostate cancer patients receiving GnRH therapy, the use of aspirin may further benefit cardiovascular outcomes beyond its effect on cancer survival ( 12 , 26 , 28 ). Therefore, there has been a precent of aspirin already used in patients with prostate cancer in order to reduce the risks associated with treating the disease ( 9 , 25 , 27 , 29 ). However, although Li et al.…”
