Aspirin and Colorectal Cancer Prevention and Treatment: Is It for Everyone?

Abstract: There is now a considerable body of data supporting the hypothesis that aspirin could be effective in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, and a number of phase III randomised controlled trials designed to evaluate the role of aspirin in the treatment of colorectal cancer are ongoing. Although generally well tolerated, aspirin can have adverse effects, including dyspepsia and, infrequently, bleeding. To ensure a favourable balance of benefits and risks from aspirin, a more personalised assessment… Show more

“…In humans, in ammation dominated by lymphocytes and plasma cells is higher in CRC compared to normal colonic mucosa (29) and non-steroidal anti-in ammatory treatment seems to be effective (35). Despite our results with a reduced presence of T-cells and histiocytes in canine colorectal tumours, antiin ammatory treatment is often effective.…”

“…GTN also presents general anti-inflammatory effects, without side effects (as seen with aspirin, for example) in the therapeutic doses (20,22,39). Although the intake of aspirin can prevent CRC development, it can cause serious health problems, such as stomach bleeding, due to inhibition of cyclooxygenases (COX) 1 and 2 (40). Different from aspirin, GTN prevents the induced colitis-associated carcinogenesis.…”

“…NSAIDs, especially acetylsalicylic acid could bring about 50% decrease in CRC incidence and mortality 49 . Moreover, numerous phase III randomized controlled trials that evaluate the role of aspirin in the treatment of CRC are ongoing 50 . In spite of this, NSAIDs application will result in numerous kinds of adverse effects such as ulcers, internal bleeding, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke 51 .…”
