Aspiration syndromes and associated lung injury: incidence, pathophysiology and management

Abstract: Aspiration is a common condition affecting healthy or sick patients which could create an acute or chronic inflammatory reaction in the lungs. Aspiration syndromes could be categorized according to a content entering the respiratory system into bacterial aspiration pneumonia with the gastric or oropharyngeal bacteria entering, aspiration chemical pneumonitis with bacteria-freegastric acid aspiration, or aspiration of a foreign body which causes an acute pulmonary emergency. There are differences in the clinica… Show more

“… 13 The possible explanation for this is the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor as the site of attachment for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on the cell surface to enter the cell. 14 , 15 The ACE2 catalyses the conversion of angiotensin II (a vasoconstrictor peptide) to angiotensin 1–7 (a vasodilator). This can bring influence the occurrence of hypertension in COVID-19 patients.…”

“…Undoubtedly, severe dysphagia at the time of admission would negatively affect nutrition intake, and further deteriorate the general function of the patient, which ultimately leads to a poorer prognosis of PSD. Aspiration represents a considerable threat to patients, which means that the risk of pneumonia tends to increase (Kosutova & Mikolka, 2021), and the occurrence of pneumonia could aggravate patients' conditions and impede their functional recovery.…”
