Aspidistra corniculata (Asparagaceae, Nolinoideae), a new species from Vietnam

Abstract: Aspidistra corniculata is described and illustrated here as a new species from northern Vietnam. In flower structure, A. corniculata resembles A. lubae, A. marasmioides, A. multiflora and A. zinaidae but possesses hornlike connective appendages in stamens that distinguish it from all the other close species.

“…The fusing of filaments with stigmatic zone of pistil in flowers of Aspidistra , as far as we know, was hitherto only observed in A. anomala Averyanov et Tillich (, p. 141), with which the here described species obviously has no close relation. Our plant somewhat resembles Aspidistra corniculata Vislobokov et al (, p. 125) from which, however, it well differs in ovate leathery leaves (versus leaves narrowly lanceolate, herbaceous), perianth tube widening at throat (versus perianth tube narrowing at throat), perianth lobes adaxially with 3–4 inconspicuous keels (versus perianth lobes with 4 prominent keels), filaments spreading horizontally to slightly upward directed (versus filaments deflexed or backward turned), filaments with no appendages (versus stamens with prominent appendage of filaments), pistil obliquely obconoid (versus pistil mushroom‐shaped), stigma orange with undulate margin (vs. stigma white with wavy margin). In flower shape Aspidistra obliqua is somewhat similar to A. erosa Averyanov et al (, p. 102), A. multiflora Averyanov et Tillich (, p. 368) and A. pileata D. Fang et L.Y.…”

“…Presently, more than a hundred species, which represent at least 70–75% of the currently known taxa, are found in this region. Though many species have been discovered during last years (Averyanov and Tillich 2016, 2017, Averyanov et al 2016, 2017, 2018a, b2018b, 2019a, b2019b, Vislobokov 2016, Vislobokov et al 2016, 2017, 2019, Nguyen et al 2017, 2020, Nuraliev et al 2017, Tillich et al 2017, Tillich and Averyanov 2018) our knowledge on species composition and distribution of many species in this area remains incomplete. The data reported in this paper provide new additional information obtained during fieldwork and garden observations in 2016–2020.…”
