Aspects of the life history of a freshwater population of the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus (Pisces: Cyprinodontidae), in the Bronx River, New York, U.S.A.

Abstract: A freshwater population of the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus, was sampled during summer and autumn 1979, from the Bronx River, New York. Other occurrences in freshwater of this common estuarine cyprinodontid fish have been noted in Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Canada. In the Bronx River, this species is a significant part of the fauna and is one of the few species found throughout the river system. Specimens were examined to determine the growth and diet. It appears that this freshwater population does n… Show more

“…Some African cyprinodontiforms and some American Cyprinodon are annual, with most individuals reproducing in a single season (Ewulonu et al, 1985;Kodric-Brown, 1988a,b). The cyprinodontiform fishes Cyprinodon muculurius eremus Miller & Fuiman (Cyprinodontidae) and FunduZus heteroclitus (L.) (Fundulidae according to Parenti,198 1) are up to 3 or 4 years old (Kneib & Stiven, 1978;Samaritan & Schmidt, 1982;Miller & Fuiman, 1987).…”

“…Growth rate of fish is often related to water temperature (and therefore to latitude): higher rates correspond to higher mean temperatures and to less variable temperatures (Elliott, 1975(Elliott, ,1989Edwards et af., 1979;Casselman, 1983;Zalewski et af., 1985;Lob6n-Cervia et al, 1986). Samaritan & Schmidt (1982) reported latitudinal growth differences for the cyprinodontiform Fundulus heteroclitus. We cannot compare likely growth of A. iberus populations because of the age bias in the Ebro population study, and the lack of growth models in Fernindez-Delgado et af.…”

“…Populations occupy waters that vary in concentrations from near FW to near SW, depending on the particular habitat in which individuals are located (Chidester 1916). There are also FW populations of the species (Denoncourt et al 1978;Samaritan and Schmidt 1982). Individuals of F. heteroclitus maintained at a salinity of 30 were unable to produce fertilized eggs if placed into FW, while they showed ca.…”

“…Despite this evidence, further in vivo studies utilizing labeled fatty acids or quantifying expression and abundance of desaturases and elongases are required to confirm this hypothesis. Euryhaline members of the genus Fundulus including F. grandis have been documented as establishing successfully reproducing populations in landlocked freshwater lakes and streams (Simpson and Gunter 1956;Denoncourt et al 1978;Samaritan and Schmidt 1982). This occurrence would be greatly aided by, if not require, an ability to biosynthesize LC-PUFAs from C 18 precursors and selectively retain q-3 FAs.…”
