Ascaris and ascariasis

Abstract: Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum are widespread parasitic nematodes of humans and pigs respectively. Recent prevalence data suggests that approximately 1.2 billion people are infected. Adult worms exhibit an overdispersed frequency distribution in their hosts and individuals harbouring heavy burdens display associated morbidity. In this review, we describe the parasite, its distribution and measures undertaken to control infection.

“…Intestinal parasites are invasive, they require living space and in many cases, they physically harm the intestine. For instance, A. lumbricoides penetrates through the gut and migrates to the bloodstream causing tissue injury that might trigger an immune response in the gut 48. In contrast, the association of E. coli with faecal leucocytes is unexpected, as E. coli is considered a “non‐pathogenic” protozoa.…”

“…lumbricoides is known as a largest intestinal nematode of human. Nevertheless, in the past, ascariasis had a considerable prevalence particularly in areas which were utilized Night soil (human feces and urine) as fertilizer on food crops, thanks to improved sanitation and hygiene facilities, in the recent decades the prevalence of ascariasis has taken a nosedive progress (Dold and Holland 2011).…”

“…This nematode has a cosmopolitan distribution and 1.27 billion persons, almost one-quarter of the globe population are infected with this parasite particularly those people who are living in the developing countries especially in tropical and subtropical areas. The reasons for this predisposition may originate from social, behavioral, environmental features that poor hygienic conditions share substantial portion of infection (Dold and Holland 2011).…”

“…The larvae incubation timing in the jejunum expected as 65 days and feeds on digestion of the host. The infected children with a marginal diet found to be susceptible to protein, caloric, or suffer from Vitamin A deficiency, which stood up in growth retardation and increases the susceptibility to malaria infection [4] and sometime in overexposed situation, it causes relative immunodeficiency [5]. In the higher infection load of this worm causes severe complication whereas, at minimal level it remains asymptomatic.…”
