Ascariasis presenting as Acute Abdomen: A Rare Case

Abstract: Ascaris lumbricoides is a common intestinal parasite found in humans prevalent in countries with low socioeconomic status. The disease can occur in all age groups but is more common in preschool-aged children. It causes significant medical, surgical, and social complications. Reported complications include small intestinal obstruction, volvulus, and intussusception. Obstruction of the intestinal tract by a mass of A. lumbricoides is one of the serious and lethal complications. We present herein a case of A. lu… Show more

“…About 30 % of adult and 60-70% children in endemic areas have worm infestation (Khuroo et al, 1989). Most of the cases however, remain asymptomatic, but in cases with high worm burden they can produce serious complications like intestinal obstruction or perforation which requires urgent surgical interventions (Agrawal et al, 2016). Though Ascaris lumbricoides infection can be diagnosed microbiologically (Arora et al, 2005), X-ray and ultrasonography is a quick, safe, and non-invasive tool for early diagnosis (Mehta et al, 2010;Mani et al, 1997).…”

“…The majority of Ascaris lumbricoides infestations are asymptomatic. However, individuals with heavy worm infestation are likely to develop a wide spectrum of acute abdominal complications such as intestinal obstruction, biliary obstruction, cholangiohepatitis, pancreatitis, liver abscess, and acute appendicitis [7]. The other reported complications include severe gastrointestinal bleeding, perforation, and even gangrene of the bowel wall [8].…”

“…Ascariasis is one of the most common helminthic disease in humans residing in countries with low standard of public health and hygiene, thereby making ascariasis highly endemic in developing countries. 1,2 The durability of eggs, high number of eggs produced per parasite, poor socio economic conditions lead to its high prevalence in tropical countries where wet and warm climate provides suitable environment conditions for its high prevalence. 3 Jejunum or ileum is the usual habitat of an adult worm.…”
