Ascariasis of gallbladder: a rare case report and a review of the literature

Abstract: Ascariasis of the gallbladder is a very rare presentation. We report a case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with complaints of pain in the abdomen, vomiting, pruritus, and fever on-and-off for 10 days. On radiological examination, an ultrasonography of the abdomen showed a dilated gallbladder with multiple linear echogenic, tubular, parallel lines inside the lumen of the gallbladder, common bile duct and intrahepatic biliary radicles. The zigzag and coiling movement of a worm was noted in the lumen of the g… Show more

“…The live worm might present as tubular, linear, parallel, non-shadowing echogenic lines inside the gallbladder lumen. On BMUS, coiling, zigzag and non-directional movements features could be visualized [5]. Common typical ultrasound features of ascariasis have been described as linear or curvilinear thick, echogenic, non-shadowing structures with central anechoic longitudinal tubes [1,4,9].…”

“…Several reports exist about the successful medical treatment of gallbladder ascariasis. 5,8,10,[12][13][14]18,19 Sometimes surgery 4,6,8,10,16 or the endoscopic procedures 7,8,10 such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographic examination are required. Albendazole and mebendazole are first-line agents for the treatment of ascariasis.…”

“…P arasitosis by the nematode Ascaris lumbricoides is a very common condition, but the presence of the worm in the gallbladder is unusual 1 . Found especially in endemic places and areas of poor sanitation, just like in some regions of Brazil, the worm is transmitted through fecal-oral route 2 .…”
