ASAS-NANP Symposium: Mathematical Modeling in Animal Nutrition: The progression of data analytics and artificial intelligence in support of sustainable development in animal science

Abstract: A renewed interest in data analytics and decision support systems in developing automated computer systems is facilitating the emergence of hybrid intelligent systems by combining artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms with classical modeling paradigms such as mechanistic modeling (HIMM) and agent-based models (iABM). Data analytics have evolved remarkably, and the scientific community may not yet fully grasp the power and limitations of some tools. Existing statistical assumptions might need to be re-assesse… Show more

“…Despite having long and deep roots, the history of AI as we know it today is less than a cen-tury old. The 1950 publication of English mathematician Alan Turing's article "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" was instrumental in the birth of artificial intelligence [10,26,34]. The term "artificial intelligence," which the community later adopted, was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 at his first academic conference on the subject [28].…”

“…This empirical model is specific to stocker cattle grazing warm-season perennial forages in the southern United States; whereas, mechanistic models are more difficult to interpret and challenging to apply due to a myriad of animal-specific inputs. With the pooling of big data, creative applications of data science, such as the example here, are opportunities; however, the output is only as accurate as the information input into the modeling effort ( Tedeschi, 2019 , 2022 ). Digestibility of NDF, as presented in the Weiss et al (1992) equation is an estimate elicited from lignin encrustation theory that used surface area.…”
