Financial management is vital to the survival of nonprofit organizations and their ability to fulfill their mission. Financial management is composed of a diverse range of tasks which require specific competencies for the success of an organization. This study explores different financial management competencies and their effect on nonprofit financial and organizational performance. Based on survey data from Swiss nonprofit organizations, a set of six distinguishable financial management competencies are derived and applied within a structural equation model. The study finds that self-assessed financial management competencies have significant effects on both the perceived financial and perceived organizational performance of nonprofits. The findings reveal that strategic financial planning competencies have the strongest effect on financial performance, and budgeting competencies have the strongest effect on the organizational performance. The study adds to the understanding of the role of different financial management areas and underlines the importance of administrative capacities for organizational success.

Did 9/11 Affect Donations to Islamic Charities in the United States?

This article studies the impact of exogenous shocks on nonprofit operations by assessing the effect of 9/11 on donations to Muslim American nonprofits. The first narrative promoted by civil rights groups and some Islamic charities argues that donations to Islamic charities have declined. Individuals are afraid of getting indicted by law enforcement agencies for advertently or inadvertently funding an organization that supports terrorism. The second narrative is that donations to Islamic charities have increased post-9/11 as donors push back against Islamophobia by supporting Muslim nonprofits. I systematically assess these narratives using difference-in-difference (DiD) methodology and find that 9/11 had no significant impact on overall contributions to Islamic charities. Although donations to internationally focused Islamic charities declined in the year following 9/11, when compared with domestic-focused Islamic charities, they also recovered shortly after that. Moreover, they did not reduce significantly when compared with non-Islamic internationally focused organizations.

Effects of Civil Society Organizations’ Capacity-Building Factors on Their Governance

This article investigates the differential impact of six civil society organizations’ (CSO) capacity-building factors on governance, using data from a survey of 366 Nepali non-governmental organizations. The factors include Organizational Commitment to Need-based Intervention, Institutionalized Learning Process, Creative Engagement of Staff in Decision-Making, Financial Management, Legal Enabling Environment, and Education of Leaders. Results from Multiple Regression in SPSS 16 show that all six capacity-building factors, both collectively and individually, significantly and positively influence CSO governance with large effect sizes. Notably, Organizational Commitment to Need-based Intervention, Institutionalized Learning Process, Creative Engagement of Staff in Decision-Making, and Financial Management explain 68% of the variance, while Legal Enabling Environment and Education of Leaders explain 19%. Financial management (38.3%) and creative engagement of staff in decision-making (26%) stand out as significant contributors, suggesting a need for targeted capacity-building efforts in these areas to enhance CSO governance. The study provides valuable insights for Confirmatory Factor Analysis and future longitudinal studies on the role of these factors in CSO governance.
