As strong as an NPI in LSF, NGT and LIS

Abstract: Negative polarity items emerge from the interaction between some propertiesof the semantic module of human language and its lexicon. This leads tothe expectation that they should be equally common in spoken and sign language, contrary to what has been documented. We describe the sign UNTIL in French SignLanguage, Italian Sign Language and Sign Language of the Netherlands. We showthat under its punctual reading, UNTIL behaves as a strong negative polarity item, just like English until. We also discuss why more pr… Show more

“…that the bomb continued to explode all the way up until midnight. In Geraci, Oomen, and Santoro (2022), we show that this same pattern is attested in the three languages in our study. Crucially, until is licensed in Neg-raising constructions in which the negation occurs in the matrix clause (11 c), but not in otherwise identical non-Neg-raising constructions (11 d), unless it is interpreted as modifying the main clause predicate.…”

“…Loos and Schulder 2022). Fortunately, we have previously demonstrated in another work (Geraci, Oomen, and Santoro 2022) that the sign UNTIL functions as an NPI in LIS, LSF, and NGT, just like its counterpart in languages like English.…”

“…Finally, a number of languages appear to have a translation of English until that is ambiguous between a positive use with a universal meaning and an NPI with an existential meaning. Notably, Geraci et al (2022) show that sign languages, despite a general tendency to lack NPIs (Quer, 2020), nevertheless frequently have an adverb meaning 'until', that may be ambiguous between a wide-scope universal and a lowscope punctual NPI. Geraci et al (2022) argue that such an ambiguity exists in at least French Sign Language (LSF), illustrated in (26), Italian Sign Language, and Sign Language of the Netherlands.…”
