In this study, we intend to observe how a strategic plan can be used as a risk management tool, in the scope of academic libraries. Risk is perceived by individuals and institutions when faced with environmental changes which threaten stability or integrity. In libraries, these changes show in structural alterations, that is, in decreasing human, material and financial resources, and this implies having to develop strategies to accommodate new situations. Inspired by concepts from the fields of management and psychology, this paper analyses risk management and strategic planning as an adaptive response to change. This idea is furthered with the case study of a university library, which shows how adapting to such challenges is possible. We report a management strategy which includes a SWOT analysis about the performance of the library, and the subsequent reorganization of fields of action and redefinition of goals and tasks. The strategy comprises all the efforts made by the library to deal with specific demands, both internal and external, which triggered stress situations and coping with them, revealing a successful adaptation in light of change. The study concludes that reducing and concentrating efforts is one way to respond to everyday organizational challenges, looked upon as risks. This case can serve as an example and source of inspiration for other libraries dealing with diminished resources.

Pesquisas de opinião sobre percepção pública da ciência realizadas no Brasil identificaram que as bibliotecas são vistas pela sociedade como espaços de divulgação científica como os museus de ciências, zoológicos, exposições, planetários. Neste estudo a literatura foi analisada com o objetivo de identificar um referencial teórico clássico, que pudesse apoiar a ampliação das atividades das bibliotecas especializadas. Estudadas as relações existentes entre a sociedade e a ciência e tecnologia, ressaltando as influências que exercem entre si; os aspectos relativos à comunicação científica para o público leigo; os conceitos de biblioteca especializada e suas diferentes denominações que variam conforme o nível de análise e síntese dedicado à informação. Considerando que os objetivos das bibliotecas especializadas devem estar em sintonia e sincronia com a missão, visão de futuro e objetivos estratégicos da organização à qual pertence, estes conceitos foram revisitados, destacando a responsabilidade social que, na sociedade competitiva e globalizada, passou a ser uma premissa para o êxito das organizações. À luz desse referencial teórico buscou-se ilustrar com o caso real, do Instituto Vital Brazil, cuja biblioteca, que se caracteriza como especializada, em perfeita harmonia com a organização, vem desenvolvendo diversas atividades junto ao público externo, levando informação científica ao público leigo.Palavras-chave: Biblioteca especializada.
