Artist-led building: farming organic knowing

Abstract: This article presents a writing collaboration between an ethnographer and two artists. It was developed from a one-week residency at Kultivator, which is an artist-led project situated on an organic farm on the Swedish island of Öland. The writing is informed by classical pragmatist philosophy and gives focus to the organic trope of human-environment continuity. Drawing on the writing experiment the article argues that Kultivator is not simply doing organic farming; but building a farm to think-with organicall… Show more

“…The concept of art did not always exist, but rather emerged in classical antiquity, when art was given a formal, technical, structural, and ideological interpretation. Art is a component of culture, which reflects in its conception the economic and social foundations, and the transmission of ideas and values, which are inherent to all human culture throughout time and space (Crawshaw, 2020). The visual arts refer to artistic and expressive representation, and are characterized by appropriation, that is, by taking elements or styles, whether their own or from other currents or movements, and incorporating them into their compositions in an original way.…”

“…Art history has substantially influenced the development of society and helped us understand each period in history while marking a milestone as each style appeared. The beginning of what now can be called art dates to 30 000 years ago, during prehistoric times, when the first evidence of art exhibitions through cave paintings was emerging worldwide (Crawshaw, 2020;Restrepo-Arango, 2019). Thus, the first art exhibitions represent the appropriation of a universal language for humanity and a sense of awareness as individuals and social beings.…”

“…The first artistic manifestations of the human being belong to prehistoric times, during the Paleolithic era more than 30,000 years ago, when they decorated the interior of the caves inhabited with mixtures of pigments and animal fats [6]. These first human creations were determined by religious motivations linked to magic and rituals or narrative purposes, not being considered works with an aesthetic or ornamental purpose.…”
