Artisans, trades, and guilds, Late Antiquity

Abstract: Continuing an earlier practice, artisans from a variety of crafts and trades came together – perhaps under compulsion – to form associations, or more commonly, guilds. These associations offered advantages not only to their members, but also to the state in respect to the collection of taxes, the control and use of labor, and the supply of food and services.
