Artificial Transmission Lines

Abstract: In this article, the concept of artificial transmission lines is introduced. These structures are transmission lines loaded with reactive elements. Thanks to the presence of these reactive elements, the lines can be engineered, and microwave devices with compact size, with superior performance, or with novel functionalities (as compared with those based on conventional lines), can be designed and fabricated. The article is mainly focused on slow‐wave artificial transmission lines and metamaterial‐based transmi… Show more

“…1a). From this response (or by means of expressions 1-3), we extract the variables of the coarse model corresponding to the first iteration x c (1) . Then, we compare such values with the target (x c * ) and this gives the first error function (10).…”

“…TL metamaterials are 1-D metamaterials comprising of the host TL loaded with reactive elements (e.g., capacitances and inductances) and/or resonators. TL metamaterials or metamaterial TLs can also be considered as a type of artificial TL [5]. Arguably, the most relevant characteristic of metamaterial TLs compared with conventional TLs is the enablement of further controllability with respect to the main line parameters (i.e., the phase constant or phase shift of the transmission line) and the characteristic impedance.…”

“…Nevertheless, the confinement of these waves depends directly on the materials used for the implementation of the coupler and the surrounding media, resulting in a poor controllability of the field decay with distance. Conversely, it is well established that metamaterial wave-guiding structures131415161718 (i.e., periodic structures with the period much smaller than the wavelength) and metasurfaces offer high controllability of the field distribution regardless of the materials composing the structure19202122. However, to the author’s knowledge such controllability has not been exploited in order to obtain a specific field confinement region optimized for a certain application.…”
