“…Egg release has previously been shown to occur over the range 10-25°C (Hales and Fletcher 1989), although the latter study did not record the quantity or onward survival of germlings. A similar temperature optimum has been reported in other members of the Sargassaceae including 20-25°C in S. fulvellum (Hwang et al 2006) and 25°C in S. horneri (Choi et al 2008) and S. thunbergii (Zhao et al 2008;Chu et al 2012), whilst in S. vachellianum, 21°C was optimal during the first 20 days, rising to 24°C after 30 days (Yan and Zhang 2014). By comparison S. wightii, from the south coast of India where water temperatures range from 27 to 33°C, displayed optimal egg liberation at 30°C (Sukumaran and Kaliaperumal 2000).…”

“…An interactive effect was found between temperature and light, with germling production favoured at low temperatures with high light intensities (10-15°C, 100-150 μmol photons m −2 s −1 ) and high temperatures with low light intensities (25-30°C, 20-50 μmol photons m −2 s −1 ). This effect may have been missed in previous studies on S. muticum and related species that examined each factor independently (Hales and Fletcher 1989;Hwang et al 2006).…”

“…Among them, Sargassum fulvellum (Turner) C. Agardh and Sargassum fusiforme (Harvey) Setchell are the most common species eaten by humans, being used in seaweed salad and soup (Sohn 1993). Hwang et al (2006a) suggested that S. fulvellum could be commercially cultured, and in 2012, production was a modest 1,354 t wet weight (Information officer 2012). Production of S. fusiforme was ten times higher, 13,024 t wet weight in 2012 (Information officer 2012), as S. fusiforme is more commonly used in traditional Korean dishes (Hwang et al 1999).…”
