Artificial Reproductive Technology – A Risk Factor for Retinopathy of Prematurity

Abstract: BACKGROUND:Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding vasoproliferative disease in premature babies. The presentation and course of ROP are determined by a complex interaction of a series of risk factors, including artificial reproductive technology (ART).AIM:To analyse and combine the information relating ART as an independent risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity.METHODS AND MATERIAL:The article is systematic review and meta-analysis using RevMan 5. Pubmed, Scopus and Medline were search… Show more

“…In 2018, Trifonova et al have published a systematic review to discuss the relationship between ART and ROP. Consistent with our findings, the results showed that though insignificant, ROP was observed which more frequently happened in ART [18]. As this systematic review only included studies directly comparing ROP happened in ART and SC groups, the observational studies which contained the data of ROP when comparing the birth defects between ART and SC could be omitted.…”

“…Simultaneously, Chiarelli et al discovered that though statistically insignificant, ART still presented higher ROP occurrence than spontaneous conception (SC) [17]. In 2018, Trifonova et al had conducted a systematic review about studies regarding ART as an independent risk factor for ROP [18]. Results showed no significant relationship of ART and stage 3 ROP and no further meta-analysis had been performed.…”

“…Studies have reported inconsistent results regarding this relationship. 5 The incidence of ROP in the literature from Saudi Arabia varies from 23.31% to 46.4%. 6,7 Because of the improvements in neonatal care, the incidence has been increasing in the last few years, and hence, the survival of extremely premature babies increased.…”

“…Also, unlike our study, the study by Corchia et al [16] has shown that there is no significant difference in the incidence of ROP between prematurely born newborns conceived with ART and those who were spontaneously conceived. By contrast, other studies found an increased incidence of both BPD and ROP in babies who were conceived by IVF [15,17].…”
