Artificial Potential Function Safety and Obstacle Avoidance Guidance for Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking with Noncooperative Target

Abstract: The problem of artificial potential function (APF) safety and obstacle avoidance guidance for autonomous rendezvous and docking of chaser spacecraft with noncooperative spacecraft is studied. The relative motion equation of the chaser and the target is established based on the line-of-sight coordinate system, the reference state is designed, and the corresponding state error is deduced. The attitude motion equation of the noncooperative target spacecraft in space is established. The safety and obstacle avoidan… Show more

“…(Zhang et al, 2015a) considered passive safety constraints together with field of view and impulse constraints. Aside from optimization-based methods, artificial potential functions (Dong et al, 2017;Liu and Li, 2019) and sampling-based methods (Starek et al, 2017) have also been applied to achieve safety in RPO.…”

“…To address this issue, some scholars use the geometric envelope method to describe the basic shape of the spacecraft, such as ellipsoid envelope [16] and super quadratic envelope [17], which ignored the details of the spacecraft shape. Besides, some modified APF methods were proposed to give more precise constraints of trajectory of proximity, such as sigmoid function-based APF [18], Cissoid-based APF [19,20], and harmonic functions based APF [21]. This paper proposed Gaussian Mixture model (GMM)-based APF, which combines the characteristics of the two methods.…”
