The anionic polymerization of A/f/V,iV,,.iV,-tetraethyl-4-isopropenylphenylphosphonous diamide (PA) was studied. From the kinetic analyses, the thermodynamic parameters, AH" and AS", and the ceiling temperature, Tc, of the polymerization reaction of the PA monomer were found to be -6.5i kcal mol"1, -2.3o X 10 cal mol"1 K'1, and 283 K, respectively. It is concluded that if the polymerization of the monomer is initiated with n-butyllithium in tetrahydrofuran above its Tc and then propagated below Tc, the polymerization proceeds at a first-order reaction rate without side reactions. The resulting poly (PA)s have predictable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions.
