Artificial Liver Support System Reduces Intracranial Pressure More Effectively than Bioartificial System: An Experimental Study

Abstract: The artificial liver support system FPSA reduced ICP values more effectively than the Performer O. Liver RanD BAL system. Compared with this BAL system, the nonbiological elimination method of FPSA is a simpler application with the advantage that it can be applied in a more continuous way.

“…Compared with hepatotoxic drug models, surgical models are preferred increasingly by some researchers, particularly in large animals [24, 25]. Generally, the primary surgical procedures used for modeling could be classified into three major categories: devascularization (total and partial), hepatectomy (total and partial), and a combination of both [26, 27].…”

“…The bilirubin adsorption column increased the capacity of bilirubin significantly ( 12 ). CVVHDF can clear medium molecular substance, blood ammonia and other toxic substances, such as false neurotransmitters, free fatty acids, mercaptan, and aromatic amino acids in patients with acute liver failure, increase the content of CAMP in cerebrospinal fluid, improve the energy metabolism in brain, and relieve and improve hepatic encephalopathy ( 13 ). At the same time, it can control capacity accurately, eliminate solute and liquid slowly and continuously, adjust the acid-base balance of water electrolytes and reduce the occurrence of brain edema due to acute liver failure.…”

“…Therefore, it is very important to identify a suitable animal model to study and understand the pathophysiology of refractory IH to develop effective treatments. Many models of neurosurgical experiments in small animals, such as rats and cats, have been developed; however, compared to humans, they have smaller brain volumes and more distinct behaviors 3,4 . While there are existing porcine models, they simulate ICH by infusing autologous blood into the brain tissue and do not replicate intracranial lesions [3][4][5][6] .…”
