Artificial Intelligence to Reduce or Eliminate the Need for Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents in Brain and Cardiac MRI

Abstract: Brain and cardiac MRIs are fundamental noninvasive imaging tools, which can provide important clinical information and can be performed without or with gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), depending on the clinical indication. It is currently a topic of debate whether it would be feasible to extract information such as standard gadolinium-enhanced MRI while injecting either less or no GBCAs. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a great source of innovation in medical imaging and has been explored as a method t… Show more

“…In the rapidly evolving landscape of osteoporosis diagnosis and imaging, future perspectives hold promising developments, particularly with the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). This is a branch of computer science focused on developing systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence [40][41][42][43]. In various fields, AI algorithms analyze data, learn patterns, and make predictions, offering solutions ranging from image recognition and natural language processing to complex problem solving.…”

“…The fundamental idea behind AI-based contrast enhancement is mostly to reduce the amount of contrast agent or to dispense with it entirely. 4,37 Yet the technology may also enable new fields to be opened up. According to the well-known motto of Paracelsus, the dose makes the poison; attempts are made to reduce the dose of contrast media or to dispense with contrast media altogether; at the same time, both contrast media containing gadolinium and iodine have an extremely high safety profile.…”

“…The generation of virtual contrast-enhanced (vCE) MRI scans from unenhanced acquisitions using deep learning was first reported in brain studies (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19). However, several recent publications (20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26) have shown the technical feasibility of such approach for breast imaging.…”
