Artificial Intelligence-Generated and Human Expert-Designed Vocabulary Tests: A Comparative Study

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have the potential to reduce the workload for the second language (L2) teachers and test developers. We propose two AI distractor-generating methods for creating Chinese vocabulary items: semantic similarity and visual similarity. Semantic similarity refers to antonyms and synonyms, while visual similarity refers to the phenomenon that two phrases share one or more characters in common. This study explores the construct validity of the two types of selected-response vo… Show more

“…During the research, we investigate explicit indicators of CPS, such as commognitive conflict categories, the occurrence and the average conflict duration etc., which are conducive to automatic identification and data analysis in the context of the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) for speech recognition. As AI technologies have the potential to reduce the workload for teachers and test developers ( Yunjiu et al, 2022 ), their further development in the application of commognitive theory can provide directions and scripts for AI-assisted teaching, particularly in commognitive conflict discourse recognition and diagnosis in the future.…”

“…Combining data from sources [1,3,[33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40]46,47], we can state that AI has become an integral and essential tool for achieving SDG 4.3. Today, AI tools quickly adapt educational programs to the individual needs of "learners".…”

“…In recent years, Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) has gained much attention beyond the computer science community, where the whole society begins to be interested in the various content generation products built by large tech companies [3], such as ChatGPT [4] and DALL-E-2 [5]. AIGC refers to content that is generated using advanced Generative AI (GAI) techniques, as opposed to being created by human authors, which can automate the creation of large amounts of content in a short amount of time.…”
