Artificial fertilization and generating families for a selective breeding programme of large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea)

Abstract: Large yellow croaker is an important marine aquaculture species in China. The aim was to determine an appropriate protocol of artificial fertilization for family construction in the breeding programme based on two trials. In trial 1, luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone A 3 (LHRHA 3 ) was injected once, with a dosage of 2 lg/kg for females and 1 lg/kg for males. The latency time was in the range of 30-34 h. The maturation stage was checked by extracting a few eggs with a Pasteur pipette. The fertilization rat… Show more

“…A female (F 3 of wild Daiqu strain, from an aquaculture farm in Xiangshan, Zhejiang province) and a male (approx. F 10 of wild Mindong strain, from an aquaculture farm in Fuding, Fujian province) large yellow croaker were crossed to generate a fullsib family ( Yu X. et al, 2017 ). One-hundred and twenty offspring were randomly selected at 6 months, and the following growth traits were recorded: body weight (BW), body length (BL) and body height (BH).…”

“…Eggs from red‐spotted grouper females were obtained by hand stripping at 36–42 hr after hormone injection. Milt of red‐spotted grouper and giant grouper were collected within a day of egg stripping and stored at 4°C (Yu, Wu, & Gjøen, ).…”

“…The development of new breeds with traits such as fast growth, disease resistance and anti‐low temperature capability has greatly increased the income of producers and enriched the tables of the consumers (Sui et al ., 2019). Over the past few decades, many selective breeding projects have been launched to improve the growth‐related traits of aquatic animals, and encouraging results have been achieved (De Verdal et al ., 2022; Frank‐Lawale et al ., 2014; Guppy et al ., 2022; Harris et al ., 2016; Li R et al ., 2011; Mu et al ., 2012; Yu et al ., 2017; Zhang et al ., 2008). The growth performance of some breeds has been greatly improved through mass selection experiments.…”
