Articles with impact: insights into 10 years of research with machine learning

Abstract: Worldwide scientific output is growing faster and faster. Academics should not only publish much and fast, but also publish research with impact. The aim of this study is to use machine learning to investigate characteristics of articles that were published in the Journal of Applied Physiology between 2009 and 2018, and characterize high-impact articles. Article impact was assessed for 4,531 publications by three common impact metrics: the Altmetric Attention Scores, downloads and citations. Additionally, a br… Show more

“…Endurance training shifts velocity/power-duration relationships to the right, allowing athletes to perform a given distance faster or to sustain a given velocity longer (Jones and Carter, 2000 ). As such, endurance training plays a central role within exercise physiology (van der Zwaard et al, 2020 ), with training methods facilitating adaptations in macroscopic and microscopic physiological determinants in response to training intensity, duration, frequency, and periodization (Seiler, 2010 ; Hawley et al, 2018 ). For example, polarized training consisting predominantly of low-intensity, long-duration training along with some high-intensity training, may be optimal to enhance (whole-body determinants of) endurance performance (Stöggl and Sperlich, 2014 ; Tønnessen et al, 2014 ), through higher adaptive cellular signaling, gene expression, and stress responses (Seiler, 2010 ).…”

“…As a matter of fact, our results point out that abstract views can be higher in the case of journals not well ranked, perhaps because these journals make more effort to attract a bigger audience, knowing that visualization is the first step to attract future readers and higher impact. Moreover, other article characteristics such as authorship or the number of references increase the article's impact, especially in traditional metrics [29,31]. Considering the bibliometric determinants of impact, it is also noteworthy to highlight the different effects of tenure.…”

“…Among the bibliometric predictors, previous literature identifies the authors and their bibliometric characteristics as variables influencing the publication impact [12,31], e.g., recognized authors or top authors with many papers and citations typically gather more attention [32], as well as authors from leading universities [33].…”

“…Resistance and endurance training research is conducted by many exercise scientists and has a profound impact on the field of sports science (Kraemer et al, 2017 ; van der Zwaard et al, 2020 ). In this study, elite rowers were monitored during their general preparation phase consisting of concurrent training focused on HLRT and during the competitive preparation phase consisting of concurrent training with a focus on APL.…”
