ARTICLE: Caries prevalence in patients with cerebral palsy and the burden of caring for them

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between caries prevalence in individuals with cerebral palsy (CPG) and the burden on their caregivers (CGCP) compared to nondisabled individuals (CG) and their caregivers (CGCG). In a cross-sectional assessment, 65 subjects with cerebral palsy were evaluated for their caries prevalence. The CGCP answered the Caregiver Burden Scale (CBS) questionnaire. Using the same methodology, 58 CG were evaluated and CGCG replied to the questionnaire. The CGCP had sta… Show more

“…In this way, the involvement of caregivers in the performance of oral hygiene is fundamental, for these children require their support and participation for periods beyond the child development stage. 10 The multifactor etiology of dental caries is well established and results from the interaction of biological, economic, cultural, environmental, and social factors. 11 Performing effective oral hygiene is the main method for preventing this disease via the disorganization of the dental biofilm, which when colonized by cariogenic bacteria, acidify the environment through the decomposition of the substrate, causing the demineralization of the enamel and consequent progression of the process to the dentin and pulp.…”

“…Based on this, it can be inferred that the difficulty in performing oral hygiene increases as the children grow older, demanding the support, participation, and involvement of their caregivers for periods beyond the childhood development, creating an overload and negative impact on the caregivers' health. [10][11] This is also a condition that escapes the domain of Odontology professionals. Training programs for caregivers on how to perform oral hygiene, and on why and how to use dental floss (85% of the children in this study do not use it) and on how to remove biofilm correctly are of great value, 10 since, when these children age, they would have these habits incorporated, facilitating oral hygiene, and sparing their caregivers the daily and repetitive struggle.…”
