Arthroscopical treatment of elbow joint disease

Abstract: Elbow arthroscopy was performed in 30 dogs of different breeds. The procedure was performed bilaterally in 20 of these dogs, yielding a total of 50 joints. Different lesions were found, varying from cartilage fissures (8) to fragmentation (42) of medial coronoid process (FCP) of the ulna. Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the humerus medial condyle was associated in four of them. All of these cases displayed varying degrees of synovitis. Osteoarthrosis (OA) in varying intensity was observed in 44 joints. The … Show more

“…Older dogs were not presented for screening probably because the breeders might have culled such dogs from breeding at that age. It will be important to determine the prevalence of ED in Boerboel dogs that are older than 6 years Manifestation of ED can be either unilateral or bilateral, with bilateral occurrence being more common (Rezende et al, 2012). In this study, bilateral cases of ED accounted for 53.6 percent of the cases of ED in the Boerboel dogs.…”

“…Surgical exploration via arthroscopy or arthrotomy may be beneficial in canine elbow dysplasia to achieve a definitive diagnosis, determine severity and allow for subsequent treatment. Direct examination and probing of the elbow joint surfaces helps achieve an earlier diagnosis (1), which has been shown to improve clinical outcomes (2,3).…”
